Philosophy of Travel

Tirzah’s Travel Philosophy

Tirzah has come alongside global partners for 25 years and has witnessed firsthand the impact a traveler's mindset, choices, and purchases can have on their destinations. We ask that you do your best to align with this philosophy of travel based on our respect and hope for our partners and their communities.

Be curious, and treat this trip as a learning opportunity. We are here to learn from our partners, serve them where we can, listen, be flexible to unplanned happenstance, work together, and return inspired and equipped to advocate for women!

Agree to enter into this experience with a spirit of learning and growth. Tirzah may provide opportunities for pre-trip or volunteer training to help us all align with our shared values and approach.

Appreciate, not appropriate. Research and ask questions before you arrive, ready to respect and understand the cultural and religious nuances that make travel an adventure. Make an effort to learn a few words in the local language and dive deep into relationships - even those made through gestures and smiles!

Avoid any activity that treats people as a tourist attraction in and of themselves. Don't do anything that might endanger or exploit the local residents, whether people or wildlife. Share your stories and spread the work Tirzah is doing! We promise, you’ll be inspired to! Use your travel dollars to make a positive impact.

Buy locally and responsibly, barter graciously. Your presence makes an impact. Be an agent of positive change.

Understand that Tirzah is a Christian organization. Our partners are motivated by their faith in God's love in regard to the equality and empowerment of women. There will be times for personal reflection as well as times to learn from our partners and pray together.

Be intentional and present. Use your downtime provided to rest, journal, pray, and be fully present to what you are experiencing and learning. Avoid being too plugged in or connected to what is happening back home. Live in the moment and soak in every opportunity you are given. We hope you leave inspired in your own faith and commitment to living with love and intentionality.
