What Women Leaders Wish We Knew
When we ask women leaders across Tirzah’s global community what they wish others understood about the women they serve, we hear a remarkably consistent message:
Women already have immense capacity.
They are resilient. They are resourceful. They understand their communities. They have ideas for what needs to change and, often, they are already doing the work to change it.
What they may not have had is the same access to opportunity, resources, training, networks, or the confidence that comes from having someone else recognize what they are capable of.
For those of us who want to support women around the world, that distinction matters.
Women are more than the challenges they face
It can be easy for stories about poverty, displacement, violence, or inequality to begin with what a woman lacks. Tirzah’s global leaders invite us to look again.
Minah works alongside women facing poverty and unsafe communities in South Africa. In a society where women can be made to feel weak or second-class, she sees something entirely different: women who are resilient, deeply capable, and already essential to their communities.
Her hope is that they learn to see that in themselves, too.
Through Tirzah’s Small Business Initiative, women gain practical tools for building livelihoods, but the transformation is about more than learning how to run a business. It can also mean recognizing their own capacity to make decisions, provide for their families, create opportunities, and lead.
That is one of the things our leaders wish donors understood:
A woman does not need us to give her value, potential, or an incredible future. Our role is to help remove the barriers that keep her from fully using the gifts, potential, and dreams that are already within her.
Leadership is already there

Across the communities Tirzah serves, women are already solving problems, caring for neighbors, building businesses, mentoring younger women, advocating for change, and holding families and communities together. Tirzah does not enter a community to create leadership where none existed. We invest in women whose leadership is already taking root.
That can mean leadership training. Business education. Mentorship. Relationships with other women leaders. Practical resources. Or simply the opportunity to step into spaces where a woman’s ideas and abilities are taken seriously for the transformative work they can bring into reality.

The women closest to their communities understand the culture, relationships, challenges, and possibilities in ways an outside organization never fully could. They help identify what is needed and shape what meaningful transformation looks like.
Our job is to listen, learn, connect, and invest.
