I love climbing and the outdoors—and as a result, movies about climbing and the outdoors. It’s inspiring to see people push their limits, brave unknown places, and stand in awe of the beauty in the wilderness. There’s no better place to experience these stories than at a film festival, surrounded by others who share this excitement, everyone gawking at a big screen filled with harrowing adventures, first ascents, and, well, lots of dudes.
Women are the outliers in most festival lineups. That’s never stopped me from attending, or even from loving every minute. It doesn’t go unnoticed, however. For example, this year I went to one night of the three-day Banff Mountain Film Festival when it toured in San Diego. Of the films they screened that evening, only one—a short film about naked mountain swimming—featured a woman.
“There was one woman and she was naked?!”
This was my friend Adriana’s introduction to and impression of mountain sports.
The next day, my friend Mariela and I scoured the internet for outdoor films featuring female athletes and compiled a list. When Tirzah’s pitched the idea of Girl’s Night In, we were ready. We had our own mini film festival, where we got to hang out with awesome women, be inspired by the women onscreen who shred and crush like none-other, all while supporting Tirzah’s work empowering women globally.
After all that, my psych levels are high and I’m ready for my next adventure! If you’re ready for some inspiration, too, check out the line-up yourself.
